Linking to articles
Use this form to find out if the full text of an electronic article is available through Lancaster's subscriptions or is freely available. The more information you can supply, the better the chances of finding a match. You will require at the very minimum the name of the journal, but if you can also supply the title of the article, author's surname, and date then you will improve your search. On clicking the Submit button an SFX screen will appear, and if full text is available a link will be provided – if full text is not available a link to the Library catalogue is available to check if the printed version is on the shelves.
Creating SFX links (OpenURLs)
If you are staff, and want to provide a link for your Web page, then use the 'Capture SFX link' from the SFX window. Copy the URL provided in the resulting window. Using that link on your Web page will call up the SFX window.
To allow off campus users to access the article then incorporate an EZproxy URL into the link. The URL below is an example OpenURL generated by the 'Capture SFX link':
To incorporate an EZproxy URL you need to add the extra information highlighted in red. You can do this for any SFX link.
http://ezproxy.lancs.ac.uk/login?url=http://lib-sfx.lancs.ac.uk/sfx?ctx_enc=info%3Aofi%2Fenc%3AUTF-8&ctx_id=10_1&ctx_tim=2009-12-04T12%3A51%3A20GMT&ctx_ver=Z39.88-2004&rfr_id=info%3Asid%2Fsfxit.com%3Acitation&rft.atitle=globalisation%20new%20managerialism&rft.aulast=deem&rft.date=2001&rft.epage=20&rft.genre=article&rft.issn=0305-0068&rft.issue=1&rft.jtitle=comparative%20education&rft.spage=7&rft.volume=37&rft_val_fmt=info%3Aofi%2Ffmt%3Akev%3Amtx%3Aarticle&sfx.title_search=contains&url_ctx_fmt=info%3Aofi%2Ffmt%3Akev%3Amtx%3Actx&url_ver=Z39.88-2004
Linking to a DOI number
The DOI (Digital Object Identifier) number of an article is often given on publisher Web sites. It is a unique number that persists should the publisher or Web site change, and is a useful alternative to creating an SFX link (for one thing they are much shorter). You can turn a DOI e.g. 10.1016/j.jacceco.2003.10.006 into a link by appending it to this URL http://dx.doi.org/ e.g. http://dx.doi.org/10.1016/j.jacceco.2003.10.006. To turn it into a link that would allow off campus users to access the article use the method described above for creating an EZproxy link by prefixing the DOI URL with http://ezproxy.lancs.ac.uk/login?url=. So, using the example above the final URL would look like this: http://ezproxy.lancs.ac.uk/login?url=http://dx.doi.org/10.1016/j.jacceco.2003.10.006

Linking to the Library Catalogue
How to create a link to an individual title
- Run a search on the catalogue – your search statement needs to be one that will retrieve only the record you are interested in (so a search by ISBN is probably best)
- Once you have the Brief List display on screen, copy the URL
- Paste the URL into your document. You now need to edit the URL by removing the Session ID – this is the long string of characters that occur between the /F/ at the end of cat.lib.lancs.ac.uk/F/, and the ?func, which signals the start of the query e.g. the bit marked out in bold, below: http://cat.lib.lancs.ac.uk/F/FQHRAFD28BEJGD18AYKYR4AXSMEMKMGN6S4UN53JKGCVF4GEG3-00427?func=find-b&request=0852928017&find_code=WIS&local_base=LUL01&x=35&y=11
- Create the hyperlink as normal – the way the link will work is that each time a user clicks on the link, the query is re-run against the catalogue (and that’s why your search strategy needs to produce a unique result)
- If it helps in retrieving a unique reference, you can run your initial search within one of the collections (i.e. by choosing a collection from the drop-down list). However, if you do this, in order for the search to be run within that specific collection when your user clicks on the link you have set up, you have to add a further string to the end of your URL, as follows:
- for media, add &local_base=media
- for journals, add &local_base=jour
- for electronic journals, add &local_base=ejour
- for maps, add &local_base=maps
- for monographs, add &local_base=books
- for theses and dissertations, add &local_base=these
- for the RBA, add &local_base=rba
- for electronic books, add &local_base=ebook
- for music scores, add &local_base=music
How to create a link to a Short Loan list
- Run a search using the Quick Search option (not the BROWSE search option)
- Use the ‘Search in’ drop down list to choose either a course title or course code, but you might need to experiment a bit to find the right combination of terms that retrieves only the required list.
- Use the ‘Collection’ drop-down list to choose ‘Short Loan’
- Once you have settled on a search strategy that produces the course reading list you are interested in, copy the URL.
- Paste the URL into your document / web page, and remove the Session ID as described above.
- You now need to add the parameter which will cause the query to be run within the Short Loan Collection. To do this, add &local_base=lul30 to the end of the URL string e.g. http://cat.lib.lancs.ac.uk/F/?func=find-b&request=politics+european+union&find_code=WOU&adjacent=N&x=26&y=12&local_base=lul30
You should now have a link to the Short Loan list.
